The Ice Dogs fell short in its quest to win its fifth consecutive Thrasher Cup in Savannah this past weekend in the Memorial Health Hockey Classic. The Ice Dogs simply didn't get the bounces they needed in order to win the closely contested matches against Florida and Georgia Tech.

Two disallowed goals in the opener on Saturday against Florida gave the Ice Dogs a 7-6 defeat.

Down by a goal with one minute to go in regulation, the Ice Dogs seemed to have scored the game tying goal, but the referee disallowed the goal because he lost sight of the puck. The Gators held on to its slim lead and defeated the Ice Dogs 7-6. Because of the two goals disallowed, this loss was hard to swallow for the team.

"I think we got too complacent in the second period and let them sneak back into the game. The referees disallowing two of our goals that should have counted didn't help either," said junior defense man Connor Kelly.

The Ice Dogs were looking to rebound on Sunday as they faced Georgia Tech. The Ice Dogs came out in black jerseys and the predominantly Georgia crowd erupted. Even with all the momentum, Georgia fell into a quick hole when Tech scored in the first minute.

Georgia tied it late in the third to send the game to overtime in which Tech scored on bizarre deflection to hand the Ice Dogs its second loss.

Despite the losses, the team had a wonderful time in Savannah.

"I can't say enough about how well we were treated down there, the city and the fans down there are great to us," Kelly said.

Goals disallowed because the "referee lost sight of the puck"? That one is hard to swallow - that's the referee's JOB, to keep sight of the puck and KNOW when a goal is scored. (Continued…)
