Candidates running for the Student Government Association in 2008 must file paperwork by Friday, said Justin Shepherd, SGA elections committee chair.

Each candidate must complete a statement of intent, a form indicating if the candidate will run with a party and a petition signed by students in the college the candidate is running to represent, Shepherd said Tuesday in a telephone interview.

Candidates' statements of intent include general information.

"The forms help us keep track of who is running," Shepherd said.

Candidates who want to run with a political party must fill out a form, which is also due Friday.

Unlike 2007, when candidates running for SGA did not face competition, Shepherd said this year's election is contested.

"There will be competitive elections this year," he said.

Each candidate must get students from the college of which he or she is enrolled in to sign a petition. The number of signatures required is different for each school.

The petitions show the "school's support" for an individual's candidacy, Shepherd said.

To be eligible, students had to attend last week's information meetings.

SGA will review the forms and tell the candidates on Feb. 1 if they are viable candidates, Shepherd said. To be a candidate, students must be enrolled in the school they wish to represent and meet the GPA requirement.

Elections will span from Feb. 4 to Feb. 15.
