An Open Letter to Valentine's Day:

You know, V-Day, you get a lot of crap for a holiday all about love.

People say you're nothing more than a holiday made up by the greeting card companies to sell cards, candy and silly stuffed animals that make kissing noises when you push them together.

Others like to spit on you for being a holiday about couples. They say you're nothing more than "Single's Awareness Day," and for that, YOU SUCK.

Well, let me tell you something Valentine's Day - I love you!

Whether I'm single, taken, sick, healthy, blue or anything else, I'm always happy on Feb. 14.

Maybe it's all the pink and cuteness peering out from every nook and cranny of store aisles. Maybe it's the memories of elementary school classrooms, cartoon cards and homemade mailboxes that you couldn't wait to open. Or maybe, just maybe, it's the sentiment behind it all.

Alright, so Valentine's Day is pretty much a greeting card holiday, but so what? Does that mean it's any less fun or meaningful? I don't think so. It's a day dedicated to letting the people you love know how much they mean to you.

It is not a holiday all about couples - it's a holiday all about love. Parents, friends and more-than-friends can all be your Valentine today.

You don't have to buy chocolate or flowers or anything else sold by Hallmark. Just call up someone you care about and tell them how much you love them.

Is it something we should do every day? Of course. Do we? Of course not.

So, Valentine's Day, I'm taking you back. I'm reclaiming you, with all your adorable teddy bears and pink hearts and doilies, and I'm making you what you've always claimed to be: a celebration of love.

No more moping. No more resentment. Put it all aside for one day and remember that there is someone out there who loves you. Today, celebrate that person.
