A shooting near campus sparked commotion Monday night outside Brumby Hall.

At 8:30 p.m. Athens-Clarke County Police responded to a shooting on Rockspring Street, said Detective Rebecca Croxton.

The suspect fled on foot to the area around Brumby Hall before heading toward Milledge Avenue, according to a witness account.

Police looking for the firearm searched the dumpsters and recycling bins behind the all-female dorm, Croxton said.

University Police arrested the suspect. Croxton said the man in custody had not been charged in connection with the incident as of 11 p.m.

The man shot in the back of his head was taken to a local hospital, given three staples and released within two hours, Croxton said.

"There is no reason for UGA Police to feel that anyone in the University community remains at risk for their safety due to this incident," University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson wrote in an e-mail sent over the Arch listserv.

Exactly *when* should they have sent out a UGa alert? The chase only lasted a few minutes. After he was caught, he was not a danger to UGa. They did send a safety e-mail announcement at that time. (Continued…)

No kidding. So between a bomb threat that closes the SLC for a couple of hours and a shooting suspect running directly for an all-girls high rise dorm, what exactly DOES UGA Alert cover?

The police didn't even have time to send out a UGA alert. BY the time they even knew who they were looking for they person had been found. I love all the alarmist students who think that a 30 second foot chase from police that started off campus for some reason warrants alerting 45,000 people. (Continued…)

UGA alert can only be activated by the UGA Police chief after getting permission from a vice provost. At 830 at night all of these people are at home, meaning that it would take time to activate the system. (Continued…)

If you want to complain, you need to complain about why there is only one person who can give permission for the alert system to be activated.

Why isn't it someone who is on duty, such as in the middle of the night (maybe a police officer who is in charge)

What if something happens while someone is at home and the campus needs to be made aware of such incidents RIGHT AWAY, and 10 or 20 minutes of waiting on permission might be deadly, then what?

Kudos to the ACCPD for getting the info to the UGA PD in a timely and accurate fashion allowing the UGA Police to capture the suspect.
