Not only can these students sing, belly dance and act, but they also can defeat you in a court of law.

Tonight, the University's law school will showcase its finest entertainers in an annual talent show, "Law Revue: Intentional Infliction of Theatrical Finesse."

LAW REVUE: INTENTIONAL INFLICTION OF THEATRICAL FINESSE

When: 8:30 tonight
Where: 40 Watt
Price: Free

The show's unusual title is a play on words based on the tort law concept, "Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress," and the law school journal, The Law Review.

"We're big on law-related jokes," said Jennifer Geller, vice president for second-year law students and the show's main organizer. "It keeps us chugging along, last year it was 'Assault and Flattery.'"

Adding another legal twist, the revue features a performance by the local "law rock" band, Mikey Mel & the JDs.

Formed in 2006 when they were first-year law students, the band is composed of now third-year students Mike Melonakos, Adam Hebbard, Dan Felz and George Campbell.

As for its name, J.D. stands for Juris Doctor, the degree received after completion of graduate law school.

"We were a big fan of the 'and the' so we had find something to fit that," said Hebbard, who plays bass and sings backup.

Inspired by their studies, the members of this power pop band pen songs with titles such as "Turn Your Cell Phones Off" and "Law is a Jealous Mistress."

"When finals are over, we're heading straight to the bar … then we'll forget everything we've learned," croons Mikey Mel in the song, "When Finals Are Over."

Though the band touts itself as "the nation's premier law rock band" on their MySpace Web page, Hebbard stressed the universality of its music's message.

"Even though we talk about the law a little bit in our songs, it's stuff that applies to everyone," he said.

Performing in business suits without pants, the band parodies the typical image of a serious lawyer.

"That stereotype never fit me too well," Hebbard said. "We may not be the best law students ever but we are the best law rock band."

Besides pantless lawyers-to-be, Law Revue also will include performances by an a capella singer, a bluegrass band and a belly dancer.

Every one of the performers is a law student.

"It's something that gives us a chance to do something other than hole ourselves up with our law books all the time," Hebbard said about the show.

Geller agreed.

"There's plenty of great talent, but it gets hidden because everyone is caught up in studying and job searching," she said. "[The show's] also a good way to get people out and active instead of sitting in the library all night."

Geller also encouraged other majors to come out to see the talent.

"We'd love to have them … walking away feeling like the law school can offer fun activities, too," she said.
