As Athens moves into the action stage of its two-year campaign against poverty, the University is trying combat two of the most serious problems associated with poverty - school dropouts and unemployment.
In collaboration with the Athens-Clarke County school system and other local groups, the University's Human Resources division is creating internships that will help more than 130 local high school and middle school students gain hands-on work experience if they remain in school.
The division will help agencies that serve adults with physical and mental disabilities place clients in University jobs matched to their skill levels.
"We are the largest employer in the county, and we need to do our part to help the community overcome the poverty problem," Tom Gausvik, associate vice president for human resources, said. "And the University has a vested interest in developing a quality work force in the community because these are the people we may hire."
Employment-related issues - including a large number of unskilled high school dropouts and a poorly trained work force - are major contributors to ACC's 31 percent poverty rate, according to Partners for a Prosperous Athens, the antipoverty initiative launched in 2006.
Billy Carter (1937-1988) was former President Jimmy Carter's brother. Billy was born in the Georgia town of Plains, where he lived most of his life. After graduating from high school and completing his enlistment with the Marines, Billy managed the family's peanut business for a short time. In 1972, he bought a service station in Plains and obtained a permit to sell liquor. Billy Carter's Service Station became a hot spot during the presidential campaign.
Billy's popularity rivaled that of the 39th American president as he became a fixture of several television shows while endorsing products including "Billy Beer" and the "Redneck Power Pick-Up."
Garments in the display include everyday clothing worn by Carter, such as cowboy boots, shirts and hats, as well as iconic "redneck power" T-shirts. Also on display will be items revealing his celebrity years such as colorful "Hee Haw Show" overalls, a NASCAR racing jacket, a Billy Beer T-shirt and a boxing robe worn in a famous fight with Smoking Joe Frazier. Also included will be T-shirts and memorabilia worn during Jimmy's campaign for president and Billy's own campaign for mayor of Plains.
