Events promote suicide awareness

Depression has many faces. You may or may not recognize them, but it probably has affected you or someone close to you.

The Nuçi's Space Student Organization is sponsoring the Third Annual Depression and Suicide Awareness Week Monday through Friday this week, which features a variety of activities.

Whether your interests include music, cinema, open discussion, sports or simply winning prizes and free food, there is a day that might appeal to you.

All the events revolve around raising awareness about depression and suicide prevention while fighting the stigma often surrounding mental illnesses.

We want to encourage anyone who's interested to attend the events throughout the week and bring friends.

SATURDAY THREATS

Student upset about University inaction

I was more than disappointed by the way the University handled the threats that were made Saturday evening.

I understand the University police chief said police felt this was an isolated event, explaining why they did not alert the University community. However, we have received e-mails regarding off-campus shootings, suspicious people on North Campus and even a student whose mental health was under investigation.

If Saturday's threats were taken seriously enough to cancel the party, why wasn't it serious enough to publicly address the situation?

Aside from the partygoers, anyone driving through East Campus and saw the electronic police sign displaying the party's cancelation was affected. For that matter, people living in East Campus, where many of the would-be partygoers congregated, also were affected.

The incident even made the news, alarming students' families and friends. Despite all of that, no one thought it might be a good idea to at least release a statement to the University community?

'University-wide' requires clarification

This whole UGA Alert situation is starting to get ridiculous. Someone threatened to blow up a party at Ramsey, and this isn't important enough to let everyone know? Oh, because it's not "University-wide?"

What makes an incident "University-wide?" Would an active shooter who's only in one building not qualify to activate the system? I don't understand what the criteria are, and Chief Williamson, I'd really like to have that cleared up.
