A University student was arrested Sunday and charged with possession of a weapon on school property, according to a police report.

University Police found a 12-gauge shotgun in a white 2003 Chevrolet Silverado truck belonging to Jess Stuart McNeill, a senior from Americus, the report stated.

The vehicle containing the weapon was found in the North Campus parking deck at 2:19 p.m.

Police identified McNeill as the owner of the shotgun. He was arrested at the scene at 2:34 p.m. and later transported to the Clarke County Jail, according to the report.

McNeill may face a felony charge or dismissal from the University if he is found in violation of the University weapons policy.

The University policy states that it is illegal to possess a weapon within 1,000 feet of school property.

McNeill declined to comment about his arrest.

It's sad we live in a day and age when a great student has to suffer because of what other crazy murders have done on other campuses. I know Jess, as do many people on campus, and I know this was an honest mistake he had no malicious intentions. (Continued…)

Jess is one of the the nicest guys I know. This is very unfortunate, and I hope they take is character into account when deciding what his punishment should be. (Continued…)

Exactly how was the shotgun discovered? Do university police routinely look into every vehicle to see what is there? I don't know the individual but apparently from the other posts here he is an upstanding citizen who, like many other southerners, carry a gun in their trucks, not to create havoc on campus, but for hunting. It is sad, but true. Crazy rednecks should not be able to carry firearms on campus. If it was an Arab looking student, the GBI, FBI, and CIA would be all over it. (Continued…)

With all the crooks in Athens, including on campus, it's hard to believe the gun wasn't stolen before the cops could find it.

This is ABSOLUTELY absurd. I've had a few classes with this kid and he is nothing but gregarious and kind to everyone. He's an outdoorsman not a "crazy redkneck" (I can't believe I gave that comment credence by responding), its completely legal to have a gun in your car anywhere else in this state, its a huge failure of the law that he faces FELONY charges. (Continued…)

THIS IS A JOKE! I have met Jess on numerous occasions and he is a great christian guy. I hope that UGA takes into account his clean record.

Redneck or Gentleman, this is nothing but a revokation of one's civil rights. Academia is supposed to prepare you for "life", yet we have speech codes, posession of weapons restrictions, etc. (Continued…)

This is ridiculous. I grew up with Jess, and he is one of the most kind-hearted individuals you will ever meet. Jess loves hunting and the outdoors, he just made a mistake be leaving his gun in his truck. (Continued…)

I know it is a bummer to hear about good people getting hit hard by the law, but a law is a law. We can't forget that that government is not entitled to differentiate "good" people from "harmful" people, and with that being the case, the law applies to all people. (Continued…)
