A University student and Bolton Dining Commons employee recently was named Southeast Region Student Employee of the Year by the National Association of College and University Food Services.

Rachel Atcheson, a rising junior from Lilburn, won $500 when she beat out six other nominees from the Southeast region. Atcheson said her supervisors told her she won during her shift at Bolton, just before fall semester ended.

"They played it off like I was in trouble," Atcheson said. "One of them said, 'You've really done it now, Rachel!' Then they gave me the letter saying that I had won the region."

Jeanne Fry, associate director of food services, said nominees are evaluated based on reliability, quality of work, initiative, disposition and their contribution to their employer.

"What really stands out about Rachel is her enthusiasm and positive attitude," Fry said. "She is a true team player and inspires others with her efforts."

Atcheson has worked at Bolton as a student worker, or "Smock", since her first day of college in August 2006.

"The best friends that I've made in college have been from working at Bolton," Atcheson said. "In such a big campus it gets overwhelming, but I have my own little section of UGA that's comfortable for me."

Co-worker Afton Moore, a junior from Waycross, said she understands why Atcheson won the award.

"She does her job with a smile on her face, even though it stinks sometimes," Moore said. "She's one of the friendliest and hardest working people I've ever met."

Atcheson will now enter the national contest for a chance to win $3,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C.

This summer Atcheson will be on the Food Services orientation team, which aims to encourage incoming freshmen to purchase the meal plan.
