Career guidance not just for seniors
ZHIYANG YU For The Red & Black

College is a smorgasbord of unique and life-changing experiences - toga parties, ultimate Frisbee marathons, writing a check for 48 cents and probably bouncing it.
Paramount among all these is obtaining the
knowledge and skills necessary to find a fulfilling career after graduation.
A potent weapon in a University student's arsenal for achieving that end is the Career Center.
Second floor
Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Walk-in hours: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A proper initial query is "What can the Career Center do for me?"
The quintessential Career Center function is career counseling, in which a student and a Career Consultant discuss possibilities for internships, jobs, graduate schools and even majors.
Other noteworthy services include résumé and graduate school application critique, interview preparation (via mock interview) and DAWGlink, the University's online job and internship search system.
There are even online resources, Wet Feet and The Vault, through which students research employers and career paths.
Kenneth Linsley, a Career Consultant, said he truly enjoys "seeing that light bulb go off. That's the most rewarding, when someone says, 'Ah, I never considered that,' and they're now excited and interested."
The Center performs many jobs, but that means little if you feel that you have no need for the institution.
"There is not a student who could not use some help with a résumé, interviewing and job search skills, Career Consultant Colleen White said."
Additionally, a misconception about the Center is that only seniors need to visit.
"If you wait till your senior year, you're way too late. There's a whole roadmap of things that you need to be doing along the way," Linsley said.
Career consultants are available during walk-in hours or by appointment. Contact the Career Center to make your first appointment and start planning your future as soon as you get on campus.
