The Learning Center in Milledge Hall offers free tutoring in a variety of subjects such as writing, reading, math and career counseling.

"Generally, first year students in English 1101 and 1102 need help with making a thesis statement, organizing an essay and grammar. We brainstorm with students to develop ideas and talk them out," said Rosemarie Goodrum, a writing tutor in the Division of Academic Enhancement.

Her specialty is helping ESL (English as a Second Language) students with writing, specifically with grammar and vocabulary choice.

Goodrum stresses they cannot proofread or edit papers for students, but they can teach good principles of writing, grammar and editing so students can edit their papers themselves.

The Writing Area is open Monday through Friday in three locations.

Free writing assistance is given by appointment in Milledge Hall Learning Center, the Student Learning Center has drop in hours from 1 to 4 p.m., and the Science Library offers appointment sign-ups online.

Another service offered is drop-in math tutoring at Milledge Hall that usually has three tutors available to answer questions.

Claire Ashley, a freshman from Peachtree City, goes to the tutoring center an average of two times a week, and attributes her A in Calculus 2250 to the help she receives there.

"It makes me stay on top. When I go to study, I know I'm doing it right," she said.

For other subjects such as chemistry and Spanish, appointments can be made online to be part of a small group of up to three people, and one on one appointments are available for special circumstances.

For more information on tutoring times and locations for specific classes, visit the Division of Academic Enhancement Web site at www.uga.edu/dae or call (706) 542-7575.
