2 Georgia track stars earn district honor
Issue date: 6/10/08 Section: Sports
Georgia seniors Ian Burrell and Natalie Picchetti were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District track and field/cross country teams.
Burrell, a criminal justice major with a 3.54 grade point average, was selected to the first team and will represent the district on the national ballot. He is also a candidate for the 2008 Academic All-America team to be announced during the last week of June.
Picchetti, a psychology major (pre-med emphasis) with a 3.69 GPA, was named to the second team.
Burrell was the only first team selection from the Southeastern Conference on the men's side and Picchetti was the only member of the SEC to be on the first or second teams for the women.
A Colorado Springs, Colo., native, Burrell is a two-time All-American for the Bulldogs and is the second individual in school history to be the league's "high-point scorer" at an SEC indoor meet after capturing both the 3000-meter run and 5000 titles in 2007. Burrell, who is one of Georgia's 2008 captains, holds three school records and will be representing Georgia in the 5000 at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships later this week.
Picchetti, who is also a 2008 captain, was the 2007 SEC co-Scholar Athlete of the Year and was the first Lady Bulldog All-American in cross country during the 2007 season since 1990. A two-time All-American on the track in 2007, Picchetti is the school record holder in the mile (4:38.66), has also won a conference championship in the mile at the 2006 meet and will be joining Burrell in Des Moines for the NCAA meet.
Both Picchetti and Burrell will join a select group of teammates at the NCAA
Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa this week. Action starts Wednesday and live results as well as meet recaps will be available at georgiadogs.com.
