A Student Government Association senator in the Franklin College was arrested and charged with underage consumption and possession of alcohol and unlawful use of an ID, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.
Blake Mitchell,19, was turned away from Sandbar downtown on June 7 around 1:30 a.m., when he produced a fake ID. When police asked to see the ID he attempted to use to enter the bar, he said he used his own ID. Officers "smelled a strong presence of alcohol." Mitchell told police he had not been drinking, but he tested positive with a .09 blood alcohol content. The legal limit is .08 in Georgia, according to totaldui.com.
SGA President Connor McCarthy said Mitchell's status in SGA is in the hands of the newly created judicial branch of the organization.
"My opinion has no bearing, and there's been no precedent with this before because it's a new branch," McCarthy said.
Also this week, a University female student filed an aggravated assault report after someone she knew entered her apartment building in East Campus Village, according to a University police report.
On Monday between 4:30 and 5 a.m., the person waved a knife and threatened her. In an attempt to avoid a possible fight, the student said nothing in response.
