Recreation program helps students get off the couch

The Georgia Outdoor Recreation Program - GORP - is sponsoring many opportunities for students interested in experiencing the outdoors. The program is dedicated to sharing activities "with the University community while emphasizing safety and respect for the environment," according to its Web site.
Although many students associate the program with activities such as caving and cycling, GORP is "more than just trips," said Jennifer Stewart, assistant director for outdoor recreation.
"GORP includes renting equipment, the climbing wall, the trips and the challenge course," Stewart said.
Students are encouraged to participate in GORP activities to learn an outdoor recreation skill in a safe, supervised setting, regardless of experience level.
Stewart said many students also join to "get a break from their regular routine" and to meet new people.
GORP trips are open to University students, faculty, staff and alumni of all skill levels. In late June and July, GORP is organizing a rafting trip to the Nantahala River, two horseback riding trips, and a caving trip to Pettijohn's Cave - Georgia's third largest cave. Equipment and transportation for most trips are covered by the organization.
Students planning their own trips can rent equipment from the Outdoor Recreation Center at the Ramsey Center. The center holds camping, sports, boating and snorkeling gear for student use.
Those who are interested in doing something closer to home can use the climbing wall located in Ramsey. Before climbing, students must first complete a Climbing Wall Clinic to learn basic climbing safety tips. Those interested in signing up for a Climbing Wall Clinic or registering for a trip can do so at the Cashier's Office at the Ramsey Center.
