Track star Burrell named to All-America team
Issue date: 6/24/08 Section: Sports
After wrapping up his career with an All-America certificate at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships, Georgia senior Ian Burrell has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Cross Country and Track & Field Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Burrell was one of 18 members selected at the University Division and was one of only three student-athletes from the Southeastern Conference.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Burrell, a native of Colorado Springs, Colo., who graduated in May with a 3.54 GPA in Criminal Justice, earns this honor just more than a week after concluding his career with the Bulldogs at the NCAA outdoor meet. Burrell finished as an All-American after taking ninth in the 5000-meter run with the second-fastest outdoor time of his career (13:48.40).
"This is a nice, fitting way to cap Ian¹s career at Georgia," said head coach Wayne Norton. "Ian has turned out to be one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of our program with all he has done in the SEC and at the national level both academically and athletically. He is a great success story."
Burrell has compiled a lengthy resume both in the classroom and on the track during his time in Athens. He was the 2007 SEC indoor champion in the 3,000 and 5,000 and the league's "high-point scorer" at that meet, which marked only the second time in school history that a Bulldog received that honor at the conference's indoor meet. In addition to holding three school
records, Burrell is a three-time All-American and was the 2008 team captain.
