Assuming you have something to say, page four can be the sassiest, most alluring page of the paper.

It could be so chock full of discussion, dialogue and debate that even those who pick up the paper solely for the crossword puzzles will start peeking at your opinions before disregarding the rest of the text.

Sadly, page four also could turn into a drab forum for seniors to wax poetic on their final year of college, or for students to write play-by-plays of "normal" Monday mornings that, "out of nowhere," turn into life-changing realizations. This page has seen its fair share of both cliches.

Personally, I prefer the former scenario: the opinions page that draws Sudoku fans away from single digits for a while to see what you have to say.

Red & Black staffers do not hold a monopoly on the opinions page - rumor has it, in fact, that even non-liberal arts majors roaming South Campus, even the ever growing population of Greeks and even - gasp - freshmen have opinions.

Anyone can contribute columns (around 450 to 600 words) and letters to the editor (around 150-300 words) to the paper for publication.

Send submissions to opinions@randb.com and include your full name, year in school, hometown and major.

The Red & Black also is looking for editorial board members for the fall semester.

The board meets daily Sunday-Thursday around 5:30 or 6 p.m. to discuss current issues and determine the majority opinion of the staff (see the "Our Take" section on the left side of the page).

If you're interested in applying, e-mail your name, year in school, interests and a writing sample to opinions@randb.com.

In light of the upcoming presidential election, many of you are sure to have passionate opinions for or against both candidates.

Although Red & Black editors are excited about covering the election, and I certainly will print political columns, please also keep in mind you can write about nearly anything.

Contributors have written about issues ranging from vegetarianism to tailgating etiquette to wars in the Middle East - potential topics are endless.

In addition, a recurring "Sex in the Classic City" column will run this semester, so feel free to contribute your two cents about dating in and around Athens.

As opinions editor this semester, I hope page four will provide the University community with a forum for discussion and debate as an entertaining and thought-provoking section of the paper. In the wise words of Uncle Sam, I want YOU to write opinions for The Red & Black.

So, what do you think?
