The Student Learning Center may not be the only University building taking on a new name this year. Tuesday, the Board of Regents discussed renaming two buildings on East Campus - a dormitory and the East Campus Commons Dining Hall.

If the proposals are passed, the dormitory would change from Building 1514 to S. Ernest Vandiver Jr. Hall, and the dining hall would become the Joe Frank Harris Commons.

Vandiver, who passed away in 2005, was governor of Georgia from 1959 to 1963, which included the University's desegregation in 1961.

Harris, also a former governor, served on the Board of Regents for seven years following his 1983-1991 term.

"Today was just ... committee meetings. The committees actually act to recommend approval tomorrow and report out recommendations," said John Millsaps, spokesperson for the board.

Today's meeting also will determine whether the SLC will be named after former state governor Zell Miller, and whether the University can start a joint master's degree program with the University of Melbourne in Australia.

HI

NO-NO-NO! Enough with the nameing of everything. Buildings are fine as what they are! Besides that is what highways and bridges are for and don't forget any other thing that is state owned!
