Headed to Columbia this weekend? With the helpful suggestions of one South Carolina student, The Red & Black's Tyler Estep runs down the list of places you should see to make your football road trip a more well-rounded one.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the first in a series of travel guides. Each Tuesday before an away football game, The Red & Black will profile the city where the Bulldogs are playing.

5 Points

Devine Street and Harden Street

No, you're not back in Athens, but this district is more for the fake ID-using or freshly 21 crowd. It comes with a caution though, in the form of the paddywagon often parked conveniently around the corner.

The Village Idiot

2009 Devine St.

Again, you're not in Athens anymore, but our SC insider describes this bar as one of the more "fratastic" in Columbia and a favorite hangout of Gamecock football players. "Amazing" pizza and specials ($3 to $6 pitchers on Fridays, $3 Bud Light bottles and $5 bomb shots on Saturdays).

Carolina Ale House

277 Columbiana Dr.

A good option for dinner with "out of this world" ribs and live music "so loud you can hear it from over a block away."

Delaney's Music Pub & Eatery

741 Saluda Ave.

Athens music lovers should be drawn to this succinctly-named watering hole, as it offers bands almost every night. There is often a cover charge, but $2 Miller Lite, house vodka and bourbon specials should help soothe the pocket burn.

Flying Saucer

931 Senate St.

For the male beer drinker, this place has it all-hundreds of beers (list on beerknurd.com) and aptly-named "Beer Goddesses" dressed up as schoolgirls. Oh, and don't forget the live music after 9 p.m.

Are there NO places in Columbia that are not bars? Are there no good "family" restaurants, no places that aren't loaded with people who are bent on being drunk before they leave the building? I know that Athens now is composed of one bar after the other and the problem with alcohol, particularly underage drinking, is rampant, but is that the case in every city where there is a university? I'll bet the Columbia, South Carolina, Chamber of Commerce would take issue with your choices of "the" places to go, places that you shouldn't miss. (Continued…)

The Village Idiot is a solid bar, but overrun with Gamecock fans.

Easy there Coastal. No one said you HAD to order a beer. It's Saturday, not Sunday after all.

Ah...this article was indeed written by a South Carolina college student.

It is true, 5 Points is a great place to go bar hopping. But ask Blake Mitchell, Stephen Garcia, and other Gamecock players. (Continued…)

I agree with Another SC Insider. There are a lot of things to do that this article fails to mention.

I lived in Columbia for 5 years and it's a great place. (Continued…)

those are the crappiest bars in columbia ever. if you want a fun time go to locals of five points or next door to luckies. I would dare to say that Columbia is a better (and cheaper) drinking town than Athens. (Continued…)
