The men's and women's tennis teams look to keep the positive momentum gained from last weekend's successful debuts as they prepare for this weekend's stiff competition.
The women's team travels to Atlanta, Ga., for the Georgia Tech Invitational(cq),while the men will host the Southern Intercollegiate Championships(cq) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex(cq).
Women's head coach Jeff Wallace(cq) is eagerly anticipating his squad's first road match of the season as Arizona State and Princeton will also be competing.
"We're excited for our first road trip," Wallace said. "There are three other very good teams who will each have a good year. Arizona State is a good team, Princeton is a good team, and obviously Tech is the host and a good team also."
Last weekend, the women's team hosted the Bulldog Invitational and saw impressive performances from freshmen Chelsey Gullickson(cq) and Nadja Gilchrist(cq)..
On the men's side, the Bulldogs will host 178 players from 32 college teams across the Southeast at the Southern Intercollegiates.
Head coach Manuel Diaz(cq) and the Bulldogs look to take another "step in the right direction."
"There's a good field and great competition" Diaz said.
Three of the men look to stay undefeated in singles play after strong debuts last weekend. No. 23 Jamie Hunt, No. 118 Josh Varela, and Drake Bernstein each recorded three singles victories last weekend at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic(cq) in St. Helena, Calif.
"Napa was a good tournament overall," Diaz said. "I was proud of Hunt, Bernstein, and Varela in the singles."
Diaz noted that some of the players were "a little rusty," but he is confident that those issues have been addressed during practice this week.
No. 12 Nate Schnugg(cq), who is the defending champion of the Southern Intercollegiate Championship, looks to get back to his winning ways after going 0-3 in last weekend's singles matches.
