The Georgia volleyball team remained without a win in the Southeastern Conference Friday night as they fell to 0-3 after being defeated by Kentucky 3-1. Kentucky won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-18, 14-25, and 25-19.
"We did not bring our game tonight, in the first two sets, and that set the tone for our evening," head coach Joel McCartney said.
After starting the SEC season by falling at Florida and at South Carolina last weekend, the team is not gelling like McCartney had hoped.
"This is reminiscent of last weekend. It's really frustrating to see a team that has the ability to make a decision and step up, as we did in game three," he said.
Georgia (7-7, 0-3 SEC) led briefly in the first set, but would quickly lose the lead. Georgia would cut Kentucky's lead to 19-16, but that was as close as they would get as Kentucky went on to win the set 25-19
The second set was a tough battle. The Bulldogs would fight hard to tie the set at 13-13, before Kentucky (12-2, 3-0 SEC) took complete control, winning 8 straight points to lead 21-13. The Wildcats would eventually take the set 25-18.
The third set was completely dominated by the Bulldogs. They would get out to a quick 4-1 lead and took their largest lead of the set 20-11. It took three set points, but Georgia would win it 25-14.
"Our leader Maria Taylor began to play her tail off and that set the tone for coming out after game three and doing something different," McCartney said.
After such a dominating 3rd set by the Bulldogs, they would return to their old ways in the fourth. Kentucky would dominate the set, not falling behind at all, on its way to cruising to a 25-19 set win.
It was evident that McCartney believes that he has a team that can compete in the SEC. but they are not at the level mentally that he wants to see.
"We've got to mature…we can't come out and play on emotion, we need to come out and play with what we have and what we see every day in training," he said. "We work to hard to just give that away."
