The Georgia women's soccer team got off the mark in a big way Friday night.
The Bulldogs posted a 2-1 double overtime win against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Georgia (3-7-1, 1-1-1 SEC) was fueled
by freshman forward Ashley Miller, who scored the game-winner in overtime and also registered an assist.
The win was the Bulldogs' first in the Southeastern Conference and snapped a seven-game winless skid which dated
back over a month. Georgia's last win, a 2-1 victory over Utah, was Aug. 31.
"[This win is] a huge confidence boost," Miller said. "I think we needed to win. We needed the W."
The Bulldogs started the game brightly, but Arkansas opened the scoring against the run of play in the 58th minute.
However, less than a minute later, Georgia responded. Miller and junior forward Carrie Patterson worked a give-and-go at the top of the Razorbacks' penalty area, and Patterson slotted home her fourth goal of the year to level the game at 1-1.
The goal was Patterson's 29th career goal, which moved her into second place behind Mandy Aiken in all-time goals.
The game remained knotted at the end of regulation and went into overtime. The Bulldogs had lost twice and tied once in
the three previous overtime games this season.
However, Miller changed all of that when she scored the golden goal 54 seconds into the second overtime period.
Sophomore defender Kelli Corless said that the win was an excellent precursor to the team's Sunday game against SEC rival LSU.
"I think this is definitely just the boost to get us started and jump right on them (LSU) on Sunday," Corless said.
