There were no bucking broncos this weekend as the equestrian team rode smoothly to its third straight win in defense of last year's national title.
Competing in its first road meet of the season - and on unfamiliar horses - Georgia defeated Delaware State 13-3 on Saturday.
The Georgia riders secured the Hunt Seat division with a 7-1 mark, and the Western events by 6-2, as Georgia won all rides in Equitation on the Flat and Western Reining.
"We're very pleased to come out of here with a win," Georgia coach Meghan Boenig said to Georgiadogs.com. "The girls rode really well and overall, it was a great day for us."
Leading the way were two of the three captains, junior Haylie Jayne and senior Kate Stewart. Jayne recorded the top Hunt Seat score, an 82, which also earned her MVP honors in Equitation over Fences, something she has done in all three competitions.
"Haylie had a great round on a difficult horse and showed a lot of finesse that proved worthy of another MVP honor," assistant coach Logan Fiorentino said.
Setting the stage for the reiners was Stewart who led the Equestrian Bulldogs as she scored a 67.5, which was worthy enough for an MVP score.
Senior Dana Kennedy made her awaited return to the Western Horsemanship scoring the highest mark of 71.5, as junior Lauren Love rode in Horsemanship, scoring a 5.5-point victory.
"Lauren was smart and effective and kept her cool on a difficult draw," Boenig said.
The team returns to action Oct. 18 as it heads to Auburn for another road competition.
Freshmen Katie Hagerty, Emma Lipman, Michelle Morris and Nina Pola have all qualified to compete in one of the nations most prestigious horse shows, the ASPCA Maclay Finals in Syracuse, N.Y.. on Nov. 2-3.
The riders qualified for this event after competing in a regional event held in September.
Georgia is the only varsity team in the country with four participants.
