The University's main library will retain 15 percent - or $250,000 worth - of the $1.6 million originally slashed from its budget, an official said Thursday.

"1,572 journals were targeted for cancellation, 80 percent of which were in sciences," University Council Executive Committee Chair Thomas Artelt said.

A memo from the administration detailing the cuts prompted student, faculty and staff feedback, which has saved specific publications from elimination.

"Only about 1,000 or less publications should be lost," said Arnett Mace, senior vice president for academic affairs and University provost.

Journals that have been requested by at least five students and/or faculty should be retained, Artelt said.

The deadline for feedback is Oct. 17. The journals will not be cut until January, officials from the library announced this week.

Also at the executive committee meeting, the Council approved the merging of two undergraduate majors - fisheries and wildlife - to create a new, all-encompassing major.

This change would bring "improved efficiency" to the fisheries and wildlife majors, and cause no impact to those currently enrolled in the separate majors, said Ron Hendrick, associate dean of academic affairs.
