For many college students, living outside of the dorms for the first time provides freedom and allows more privacy and downtime.

However, with the newfound freedom and privacy comes a drawback: The Ramsey Center is no longer just a bus ride away.

This means the dreaded "freshman 15" may catch up with those who are no longer as active.

Many apartment complexes provide weight room facilities, which are beneficial for staying in shape. Most of these workout rooms aren't on par with the Ramsey Center's multiple floors of workout equipment, athletic courts and olympic-sized swimming pool, but many have treadmills and elliptical machines available.

The cardiovascular workout will help to reduce fat by burning calories, which will help maintain a healthy body.

Many complexes also offer a pool which is another great cardio workout. The pools are almost all outside, which doesn't allow for winter swimming.

These options are helpful, but the workout room or pool may not be big and often can be crowded. A simple jog around the complex or nearby road with sidewalk can be another simple solution.

A trip to the intramural fields also can incorporate fun into the workout. Soccer, Frisbee, or just throwing a football is a good way to stay in shape without even realizing how much you are working. Joining an intramural team in any sport can help as well.

If nothing else, performing push-ups and sit-ups in the floor of your own apartment can help strengthen core muscles.

For those who wish to have a more athletic club experience, the Omni Club and Bodyplex gyms offer members a vast assortment of exercise and cardio equipment to meet any desired fitness goals with affordable rates for students.

The Omni boasts the most cardio machines in Athens, with treadmills, ellipticals, stairmasters and stationary bikes. It offers spin classes, yoga and kickboxng. There is also a unique women's only workout area and locker room.

There are many options to avoid putting on weight and stay in shape while living in an apartment. The key is staying motivated to live an active, healthy lifestyle.
