Lady Dogs open season with 50-point win

Porsha Phillips scored 15 points and Ashley Houts added 14 as the Georgia women's basketball team started with a 85-35 over Alabama State Saturday night.
The Lady Dogs held the Hornets to only 13 points in the second half and every member of the Georgia team saw playing time in the victory.
The Lady Dogs opened the game with a 3-pointer from Houts and never let up, building a 31-11. Alabama State scored five straight, but Georgia went on a 12-0 run and headed into halftime with a 49-22 advantage.
Phillips and Houts led the way in the first half with 11 points as the Lady Dogs shot 64 percent. Erica Lumpkin was almost the entire offense for the Hornets as she hit on 4 out of 5 3-pointers that she attempted for 12 of the 22 points for Alabama State.
The Hornets went cold after intermission, as Lumpkin was 0-5 on 3-pointers and the Lady Dog defense shut down anything that Alabama State attempted. The Hornets did not score a field goal after the 17:17 mark in the second half and only scored four points - all coming from free throws-after the 16:41 clip.
Houts and Phillips played limited minutes in the second halh. Jasmine Lee scored 8 of her 9 points in the half and Christy Marshall scored 6 of her 11 after the break. Danielle Taylor also finished the game with 12 points.
Georgia next plays Oakland University Thursday night in Rochester, Michigan.
