A wrap-up of the week's ups and downs
Issue date: 11/21/08 Section: Opinions
Local flavor
With the economy in the dumps, many local businesses are facing tough times. As you decide to go out to eat, find entertainment and shop for holiday presents, remember the local restaurants, clubs and boutiques. A little of your money can go a long way for some establishments' balance sheets. And remember, if the mom and pop stores go under, so does all the Classic City's local flavor.
Crime and punishment
University Housing is fining all fourth-floor residents because of vandalism that happened to take place in a public bathroom on that floor. Sure, ripping a sink out of a wall causes heavy - and costly - damage, but we don't think innocent people should be punished simply because the University hasn't found the guilty party. Just say no to collective punishment.
Gift-giving getting you down?
With the recent economic downturn, we're sure many students will have trouble affording presidents for all their close ones during the holidays. Instead of going for the most expensive gift for your significant other, try thinking of something more thoughtful - picture frames, baked goods and self-made coupon books are a few ideas. Remember, the holidays have much more meaning than swiping credit cards.
The nick of time
Your week-long break is nearly here. We hope everyone uses the extra time to relax and spend time with family and friends, but also keep in mind there are only seven days of school when we get back. If you're really behind in a class or have an early final exam slot, think about being productive and having fun during the break - it is possible to do both.
Take care
As you embark on your Thanksgiving vacation, remember to take caution as you enjoy a full week away from school. Lock doors and secure valuables before leaving Athens, and drive safely as you go home. Have fun, eat lots of good food and be safe on the break!
Continue the streak
Our football team is going for its eighth consecutive win over Georgia Tech next Saturday. A win this year would mark the longest consecutive winning streak held by either team. Right now, we're tied at seven with Tech for the most wins in a row. Let's cheer on the Dogs, so we can dominate those Yellow Jackets once again.
Quote of the week: "Probably something like go-karts or something. Something weird, not like dinner and a movie or anything. I'd probably do something fun, just get out there and have a good time. Putt-putt or something, just something weird like that. Rock climbing, that might be fun. That might not be my ideal date, but it might be something random that I would pull out. I get tired of running around sometimes, but if I had enough energy to get out there and have some fun? Putt-putt. Gotta get out there and show 'em my skills."
- Bulldog wide receiver Kris Durham when asked about his ideal date.

Am I the only one who can't read this article online due to the horrible placement of the Best Buy Ad and the daily poll? Perhaps its about time we let the GT boys run our website. (Continued…)
