One University student was arrested and warrants will be sought for another student after a fight at a downtown Athens bar early Saturday left a man with severe eye damage.

According to an Athens-Clarke County police report:

The fight began inside Flanagan's bar when Jeffrey Allen Stovall, a senior from Suwanee, tried to take a female's purse and bar employees intervened. Stovall grabbed a glass and hit Flanagan's employee and University junior Guilherme Villarinho in the eye, shattering the glass and "causing severe damage" to Villarinho's eye. Stovall's fingers were also cut.

Stovall and his friends then ran out of the bar and down Clayton Street toward College Avenue. Several employees chased Stovall and a fight broke out between the two groups.

When an officer arrived, Andrew Jordan Stipe, a junior from Suwanee, and an unidentified male were on the ground fighting. The officer attempted to turn over Stipe to handcuff him when Stovall hit the officer.

The officer punched Stovall, who fell to the ground and then began to run away. A witness chased Stovall and held him down until an ambulance arrived.

Stovall and Villarinho were transported by ambulance to Athens Regional Medical Center for their injuries.

Stipe, who hit the officer several times when he was being handcuffed, was charged with simple battery of a law enforcement officer, disorderly conduct and underage possession of alcohol. When contacted by The Red & Black Monday, Stipe declined to comment.

Warrants will be obtained at a later date for Stovall for aggravated assault, simple battery and disorderly conduct. Efforts by The Red & Black to reach Stovall on Monday were unsuccessful.

This is not the first time Flanagan's was involved in a fight that included students and violence with glass objects. Two years ago, then-University student Kristin Necochea hit a bartender across the face with a 16-ounce mug, police said. She was found guilty of simple assault in a jury trial in October of this year.

"Stovall and his friends"? Who would be friends with this guy?

One would think that a senior who has made it through all these years @ UGA would think beyond a bar fight to his future at the university and in life, but apparently he is NOT smarter than a fifth grader. (Continued…)

That Stovall guy is a freak, an absolute waste of a life. So are his buddies. He should be thrown in jail for a long time. I feel bad for the bartender who got hit with the glass. (Continued…)

I know both of these guys and I can only hope there is more to this story, because this looks terrible.

I fail to see how it is Flanagan's fault for the actions of their patrons, CoastalDawg. I was there when this happened and they handled the situation very well and were helpful to the police in anything and everything they needed for the case. (Continued…)

I can see that the author of this article is going just by what the police report said, and did not actually talk to anyone that actually saw what happened. (Continued…)

@ Kyle

I find that situation much easier to believe, knowing Mr. Stipe and Mr. Stovall.

I have seen many cops lie or stretch the truth in police reports before in order to protect their own, and it seems a little truth stretching is going on here. (Continued…)
