Lady Bulldogs battle, but fall to Virginia 62-60
Issue date: 1/5/09 Section: Sports
Georgia's Ashley Houts scored a team-high 19 points but it was not enough to overcome No. 16 Virginia (12-2) as the Cavaliers secured a 62-60 victory over the Lady Bulldogs (9-5) on Friday night at John Paul Jones Arena.
Porsha Phillips added 10 points and Angel Robinson collected a game-high 11 rebounds for Georgia. Monica Wright and Lyndra Littles scored 24 and 23 points, respectively, for Virginia and combined to score 28 of the Cavaliers' 36 second-half points.
"I'm proud of the way we battled all night," Andy Landers said. "For the most part, we were very good defensively, but Virginia did a great job in the last three minutes of nailing a couple of big shots from the perimeter. Offensively, when we kept possession, we were good, but turnovers continue to haunt us. We're playing on the road against a very good Virginia team, and we give them 20 extra possessions. It's tough to overcome that."
Enonge Stovall grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed free throw and then connected on both ends of a one-and-one herself with 22.2 seconds remaining to put the Cavaliers up 60-56. That represented the first time Virginia owned a two-possession lead since the 11:57 mark of the first half.
Phillips pulled Georgia within two points on a stickback with 2.1 seconds left; however, Virginia successfully inbounded the ball after a timeout and ran out the clock.
Wright scored seven of the Cavaliers' first nine points of the game as they opened up a 9-2 lead less than four minutes in. Virginia maintained a seven-point edge before a 6-0 run Georgia pulled within one at 13-12 at the 10:55 mark.
The Lady Bulldogs eventually tied the game and then took their first lead consecutive three-pointers from Jaleesa Rhoden. The second put Georgia up 23-21 with 3:53 left in the half, and the Lady Dogs maintained the same two-point advantage at the break.
The Lady Bulldogs open Southeastern Conference play Thursday at Ole Miss at 8 p.m.. That contest will be televised regionally by CSS.
