Issue date: 1/7/09 Section: Sports
The two-time defending Southeastern Conference Tournament champion Georgia women's tennis team opens up the 2009 season ranked sixth, according to the ITA rankings released Tuesday.
Georgia is the highest ranked school from the Southeastern Conference. Northwestern is in the top spot followed by California, UCLA, Baylor and Stanford. After Georgia, Florida is seventh; Georgia Tech is eighth with Duke and Southern California rounding out the top 10.
The Bulldogs have five singles players ranked in the top 125 and a pair of doubles teams in the top 40. Bulldog freshman Chelsey Gullickson headlines the Georgia contingent at number seven. She went 14-4 this past fall while freshman Nadja Gilchrist checks in at No. 44 after a 10-4 fall record. Junior Yvette Hyndman is No. 100; senior Monika Dancevic is No. 101 while junior Naoko Ueshima is No. 123. The Hyndman-Gullickson team is No. 10 while the Dancevic-Gilchrist tandem begins the New Year at No. 34. The Hyndman-Gullickson duo went 7-4 this fall including 4-2 against teams ranked in the top 50 while Dancevic-Gilchrist went 6-4 including 2-2 against top 40 teams.
Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace begins his 24th season at the helm, and he said the Bulldogs are looking forward to the start of the indoor season next week.
"It's early right now to predict how this team will do in 2009," said Wallace. "We have to focus on improving, learning and working to understand the mission, and if everybody does, great things can happen. There's a lot of growing still to be done to be able to contend from January all the way through May."
Classes resume at UGA this Thursday. The Bulldogs will be back in action Jan. 16-18 when it plays host to the Georgia Invitational, a singles and doubles event featuring players from Kansas State, Troy and Auburn-Montgomery. The first team dual match will be here Jan. 22 against Memphis.
