Students may have to skip trips to the doctor if health care doesn't change, according to members of the University's Roosevelt Institution.

NATIONAL ISSUES FORUM

When: 6:30 tonight
Where: Moore College lobby
For more information about the University's Roosevelt Institution, visit its Web site at http://www.ugaroosevelt.com/ or http://rooseveltinstitution.org/.

Roosevelt, a student-run think tank modeled after those in Washington, D.C., is hosting a forum about the health care issues facing President Barack Obama's administration.

"We're going to be discussing just what the Obama administration is geared toward with the health plan," said Lucas Puente, a junior from Wilmington, N.C., and executive director of Roosevelt's University chapter, in a phone interview Monday. "Really it's going to be about health care and providing access."

Roosevelt's policy director, Patrick Dever, said he sees health care as a huge problem facing the United States.

"Rising health care prices affect everyone, not just the uninsured. In the next few years if the current trend continues, we could see increases in health care that may leave many students uninsured," Dever, a junior from Atlanta, said in a phone interview Monday.

The forum will begin with refreshments and an opening address before participants split into four moderated groups of 10 to 20 people to share thoughts on the issues.

"It's all about discussion," Puente said. "There won't be any sort of ideological spin on the rooms."

Each group will be led by a student moderator from the Roosevelt Institution who will keep the conversations on topic.

"We don't want to narrow the scope too much," Puente said. "We just want to make sure they don't get too off topic."

Dever said the discussions are always interesting.

"The one thing we try to do is provide background information. You definitely don't need to be an expert in health care," he said. "You get a bunch of different people and a bunch of different angles. You're able to see a lot of compromise between ideologies."

Jill Turner, a sophomore from Tyrone and event coordinator for the institution, said she got her start with Roosevelt last year by getting involved in events similar to the forum.

"I just started in the general club just doing some different things," she said in a phone interview Monday. "This is a good way to get involved."

Roosevelt is a national institution whose primary mission is researching public policy ideas.

This forum is the University chapter's first of many set to address the issues facing Obama's first 100 days in office.
