Bulldogs' relay tops swimming and diving at last chance meet
Issue date: 3/2/09 Section: Sports
The Georgia men's 200 free relay team set a new school standard and 10 swimmers swam times that reached the NCAA provisional qualifying standard on the opening night of the Bulldog Last Chance Invitational, held Saturday at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
The men's 200 relay team of Craig Jennings, Michael Arnold, Richmond Green and James Lavender recorded a time of 1:18.19, beating the mark set in 2007 by more than .60 seconds. The time also met the provisional qualifying standard for the event.
Seven women recorded provisional qualifying times for Georgia. Included in that mix was Erica Malagon in the 200 and 500 freestyle, Lauren Cartwright in the 200 individual medley, Emily Montesinos in the 50-long course meter freestyle, Allison Schmitt in the 200 butterfly and Lisa Caprioglio, Kelly
McNichols and Chelsea Nauta in the 100 butterfly.
On the men's side, Peter Benner reached the mark in the 500 freestyle, Hunter Lainhart did so in the 200-long course meter backstroke and Todd McGraw in the 200-long course meter butterfly.
Those efforts highlighted the day for Georgia, and head coach Jack Bauerle is hopeful some of those swims could qualify for next month¹s NCAA Championship meets.
In the meantime, he's hoping for similar efforts from his teams on the final day of the invitational Sunday.
"I think we had some real good swims today," he said. "I think Kelly McNichols and Lisa Caprioglio found their way into the national meet, and Allison had a great swim (in the 200 butterfly). I was really happy with
Hunter's swim. Malagon was one of the swimmers of the meet. She was real sick last week at the conference meet and we are really happy with her. And Peter Benner was terrific every time he stood up.
"It was a good meet and it was everything we wanted to get," Bauerle said. "Everything we thought we could do, we did and we hope to get some more of the same tomorrow."
The Georgia divers had strong efforts in the diving well Saturday. Lexie Bryant and Landon Watters finished with personal-best scores off the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events for the Lady Bulldogs, while Owen Blank recorded a new personal best off the 3-meter springboard for the men's team.
The final day of the Bulldog Last Chance Invitational will be Sunday with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals starting at 4 p.m. The meet will be held at the Gabrielsen Natatorium and admission is free.
