Second-ranked Georgia defeated Furman 5-1 Sunday as a rare snowstorm blanketed the Classic City and forced the match indoors.

The Bulldogs (11-1) claimed the doubles point and then won four singles matches over the 72nd-ranked Paladins. Georgia now has won 54 consecutive home matches at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Furman drops to 6-6 on the year.

"Today was a tough match, we played an excellent doubles point, and they were as tough as anybody we've faced in the top of the singles lineup," said Georgia coach Manuel Diaz. "Everybody had to work hard out there and now we have to get some rest and get ready to go out on the road for the start of SEC season."

Georgia's seventh-ranked duo of Jamie Hunt and Nate Schnugg were the first to finish, posting an 8-3 win at No. 1 over Andy Juc and Chris Motes. Then, the No. 3 Bulldog team of Drake Bernstein and Javier Garrapiz edged Andrei Chevtsov and Chris Rhyne 8-6. The Bernstein/Garrapiz team has won seven in a row and are 14-4 overall. In the other match, the No. 2 Bulldog duo of Borja Malo and Christian Vitulli beat Bo Ladyman and Jordan Walters 8-4.

Hunt gave Georgia a 2-0 lead when he defeated Juc 6-1,6-4 at No. 1. Ranked 58th nationally, Hunt improved to 21-6 on the year. Schnugg's 7-6(4),6-2 win over Ladyman at No. 2 made it 3-0 Bulldogs. Schnugg, ranked 11th nationally, has won five in a row to move his record to a team-best 25-8 including 10-1 in dual matches.

Furman notched their first team point when senior Daniel Krause beat Malo 6-4,6-3 at No. 4. Meanwhile, Garrapiz and Phillip Fuelkell split sets at No. 3 while Bernstein grabbed the first set 6-1 over Walters at No. 5. Bernstein clinched the win for the Bulldogs as he took care of Walters 6-1,6-2. It was the first career-clinching win for the Bulldog sophomore who ran his record to 20-8.

"It was great to clinch my first match because I've been on the court and been around the time when it's almost happened, and it feels good to come through," said Bernstein. "We're trained to stay focused during the match, and that's what I was trying to do even with the lights flickering some times and knowing it was snowing a lot outside."

Garrapiz outlasted Fuelkell 6-2,6-7(5),6-4 for a 5-1 Bulldog advantage. He remained perfect on the year in dual matches at 9-0. Garrapiz is 21-6 overall. At No. 6, Vitulli and Sawyer Duncan split sets and started a super tiebreaker in lieu of a third set. However, they never got to finish. Vitulli led 5-3 when the power in the complex went out due to the snowstorm that hit Athens Sunday.

Georgia will be back in action Friday when it opens up Southeastern Conference play at ninth-ranked Ole Miss.
