Gone, not forgotten

In honor of Eve Carson's death, Clarke Central High will host a service tonight.

It's been one year since the city of Athens suffered the loss of a native daughter. Eve Marie Carson, a friend to a countless number of people within the local community, was tragically killed March 5, 2008, in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Though Eve was not a University student, her death was felt throughout the entire community. As Clarke Central High School's valedictorian and student body president at UNC-Chapel Hill, Eve left the memory of her smile in two college towns. Her death, and the death of Auburn student and Marietta resident Lauren Burk a day earlier, was an agonizing experience for Athens and the state of Georgia.

As this first painful anniversary of Eve's death arrives, many students have dedicated their Facebook pictures and statuses to the young woman's memory. Her face is shown on storefronts and windows, much like they were during the weeks immediately after her death.

Although most of us are focused on acing midterms before shuttling off to the beach next week, let's not forget the memory of a young woman whose promising life ended too soon. We may be spending our college years preparing for our futures, but let's not forget to enjoy the precious present.

Some of Eve's closest friends have planned a memorial service and encourage all to attend. At 7:30 tonight, they'll have a moment of silence as they stand with lit candles around Eve's Tree, an oak planted in her honor at Clarke Central High School on Baxter Street.

Much like the memory of its namesake, Eve's Tree is still here after weathering the recent snowstorm.
