Issue date: 3/6/09 Section: Sports
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The 11th-ranked Georgia Bulldogs downed the 24th-ranked Baylor Lady Bears, 12-1, in five innings in the Easton SEC/Pac-10/Big 12 Challenge at the University of Alabama Softball Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Georgia (13-1) scored its 12 runs on 11 hits highlighted by a seven-run third inning to win its 10th straight contest. Each of the 10 consecutive wins and 12 of the 13 wins by the Bulldogs this season have come via run rule.
Senior pitcher Christie Hamilton tossed her fifth complete game of the year allowing just one run on two hits to improve to 6-0. Baylor (18-5) starting pitcher Shaina Brock allowed three runs in an inning of work to suffer the loss and fall to 5-2.
The Bulldogs were the visiting team in the game and took a 1-0 lead in the first. Sophomore Taylor Schlopy (2-for-4, 3 RBI) led the game off with a triple to right center, and senior Kristin Schnake followed with a sacrifice fly to left.
UGA extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of second. Sophomore Brianna Hesson (2-for-3) led off the frame with a single that bounced off the first base bag. Freshman Kristyn Sandberg came up next and belted her first-career home run to center field that led to the exit of Brock from the game. Baylor turned to Brittany Turner in relief, and she got out of the inning to bring the Lady Bears to bat in the bottom of the inning, where Bree Hanafin provided Baylor with its loan run of the game on a home run to center.
Georgia decisively answered the Baylor run with seven more of its own in the third to extend the advantage to 10-1. Schnake drew a walk to start the rally, and sophomore Alisa Goler drove her in with a double to right. After a groundout moved Goler to third, Hesson picked up an RBI on a single to left. Baylor picked up the second out on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat, but a bunt single freshman Lisaira Daniels (2-for-2) and a hit-by-pitched issued to freshman Maya Branch loaded the bases. Georgia then sent freshman Brittney Hubbard to the plate to pinch hit, and she delivered a two-run single to right leaving runners on the corners. An illegal pitch during the next at-bat allowed Branch to score, and then Schlopy capped the inning with a two-run home run off of the left field foul pole. Schnake added the Bulldogs second triple of the game before the inning came to a close.
In the fifth, Daniels drew a walk and Branch followed with the Bulldogs' third triple to drive in another run. Schlopy picked up her third RBI later in the inning when she reached on a fielding error by the Baylor second baseman.
Also of note for the Bulldogs, the two home runs in the game brought the Bulldogs' team home run total to 25, which is just one home run shy of last year's team total of 26.
Georgia will play two more games in the Easton Southeastern Conference/Pacific-10/Big 12 Challenge on Saturday. The Bulldogs meet the No. 1-ranked Washington Huskies at 12 p.m. ET, and will face the Lady Bears again at 7:30 p.m.
