BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Georgia senior shortstop Kristin Schnake has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for softball according to an announcement made by the league on Monday.
Schnake, a native of Richview, Ill., was named to the Easton SEC/Pacific-10/Big 12 Challenge All-Tournament Team after batting .444 (4-for-9) with a hit in every game, three runs, two RBI and four stolen bases. Schnake also fielded 1.000 with seven putouts and eight assists. She helped the Bulldogs go 3-1 at the Easton Challenge sweeping two games from No. 24 Baylor and splitting a pair of games with No. 1 Washington. In the Bulldogs' victory over the Huskies, Schnake went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two stolen bases.
On the year, Schnake is batting .439 with 19 runs scored and 11 RBI. She currently leads the team with three sacrifice flies, six sacrifice hits and seven stolen bases on seven attempts. Her six sacrifice hits this season have raised her career total to 27, which ranks tied sixth in school history, and the seven stolen bases have raised her career stolen base total to 33, which places her two steals shy of breaking onto the top-10 in school history. Additionally, Schnake's 29 assists in 2009 have elevated her to 262 career assists, which stands sixth in UGA history and is just six away from fifth.
The SEC Player of the Week honor is the first weekly honor from the league for Schnake, and it marks the second time a Bulldog has earned the award this season. Sophomore Alisa Goler received the honor on Feb. 23.
