Zamora first, Georgia women third at UNLV Invite
Issue date: 3/11/09 Section: Sports
Marta Silva Zamora carded a 2-over 74 in Tuesday's second round of the UNLV Spring Invitational to remain atop the individual leaderboard. The Freshman is tied in first with Natalie Gleadall of Nebraska and Ulrika van Niekerk of Texas Tech with 18 holes remaining.
Georgia shot 4-over 292 - 20 strokes better than the previous day - in the second round and remained in third place in the team competition at Boulder Creek Golf Club. UNLV shot 5-under 283 to vault atop the team standings. The Lady Rebels are at 595, two shots better than Texas Tech and nine strokes ahead of the Bulldogs.
"Obviously the conditions were much better today," head coach Kelley Hester said. "It was cold but not nearly as windy."
Carolina Andrade (70) and Mallory Hetzel (71) fired under-par rounds to pace the Bulldogs. In addition to Silva Zamora's 74, Georgia also counted a 77 from freshman Tess Fordham.
"Carolina had a great round," Hester said. "She really bounced back well after an 81 yesterday. Mallory was strong for a second straight day. Marta was very solid as usual. Tess played very well. She finished strong and played the final three holes at 1-under."
Andrade birdied No. 1 and then posted a dozen straight pars before a birdie at No. 14. She went bogey-birdie at No. 15 and No. 16 before finishing her day with a pair of pars.
Hetzel's red-number was a little more up and down. She birdied No. 3, but double-bogeyed No. 4 to fall to 1-over. A trio of birdies at No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7 moved her to 2-under before a double-bogey at No. 8 made her even at the turn. Hetzel returned to 2-under with birdies at No. 13 and No. 15 but concluded her day with a bogey at No. 18.
Overall, Hetzel is tied for second at 146, just two shots off the pace. Andrade is tied for 17th at 151, Fordham is tied for 76th at 163 and Leigh Crosby is 96th at 179.
"We played pretty well late in the day so we'll carry that positive feeling over to tomorrow," Hester said. "This is the kind of golf course that if you can get it going you can go low. We'll give it a good run tomorrow."
