Softball team tops LSU 6-5
Issue date: 3/13/09 Section: Sports
Seventh-ranked Georgia softball defeated 20th-ranked LSU, 6-5, in game one of an SEC double header on Saturday afternoon at the UGA Softball Stadium, and game two was suspended in the top of the fourth until 11 a.m. ET Sunday due to rain.
Sophomores Taylor Schlopy and Megan Wiggins led the Bulldogs to victory in game one, the Bulldogs' first Southeastern Conference home contest this season. Schlopy went 3-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs, and Wiggins went 1-for-2 with a home run and three runs-batted in.
Georgia improved to 16-4 overall and 1-2 in SEC play with the win, while LSU fell to 15-6 overall and 2-2 in league action. Sophomore Sarah McCloud earned the victory to go to 8-1 on the year after working 6.2 innings, and senior Christie Hamilton struck out the final Tiger batter to pick up her first save of the season. LSU's Cody Trahan suffered her first loss of the season to fall 5-1.
The Bulldogs and the Tigers completed three innings in game two before rain stopped play during the top of the fourth. Georgia led 4-2 after three innings, but LSU had picked up one run in the fourth frame to make it 4-3 and had the bases loaded with one out when play was halted. Schlopy started game two in the circle for Georgia, but the Bulldogs had turned to Hamilton in the middle of the fourth. Brittany Mack started and pitched the first three innings for the Tigers.
Game two will resume play from where it was halted at 11 a.m. on Sunday. The third game of the series that was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. will now start approximately 15 minutes following the conclusion of game two.
