Apartment dwellers, take heart. Just because you lack a yard doesn't mean a garden is completely out of the question.
For root vegetables such as carrots and radishes, 12-inch circle pots allow roots to grow to full size without taking up floor space.
Tomato plants and fruit trees, such as mandarin and lime, can be planted in the same type of tall, round pots but take up more space due to branches.

WHEN TO GROW

March: beans (broad), carrots, brussel sprouts, spinach, strawberries
April: broccoli, asparagus, beans (French & pole), beets, peppers

In addition, herbs such as bee balm, mint, lemon balm, basil and cilantro, can be grown in rectangular floor pots and can be planted side-by-side to save space.
To save floor space, window box hangers offer plenty of support to hold up herb boxes, and hanging baskets can hold vine plants. They can be found at gardening stores.
