PANTHERSVILLE, Ga. - Playing on a field that rivaled any local high school's, the Georgia freshmen picked up the slack and carried the No. 4 Georgia baseball team to an 11-6 victory over the Georgia State Panthers Wednesday.
Freshmen Colby May, Chase Davidson and Levi Hyams combined to drive in eight RBIs and freshman pitcher Chase Hawkins pitched 2.1 innings in relief to lead the Diamond Dogs (16-2, 1-2 SEC).
"They've done it all year," head coach David Perno said. "If it's not Levi, it's Colby, if its not Colby it's Chase. "
Davidson hit a mammoth two-run home run to center in the second inning to score Lyle Allen, giving Georgia a 3-2 lead. Georgia extended its lead to 4-2 in the third on a single by May that scored center fielder Matt Cerione, who had tripled.
Playing a new position didn't bother Hyams (he moved to shortstop and Michael Demperio moved to second. Hyams drove in a career-high four runs in the fourth and three more on a bases-clearing double in the fifth.
"It was kind of sudden, but short and second are kind of the same position," Hyams said. "It was just a different mind set and if coach chooses to keep me here I am just going to embrace it and practice hard."

Michael, nice knock at Georgia State to open the article. I'm sure several other schools could liken the high school facilities wisecrack to our joke of a basketball arena. (Continued…)
