At almost any given moment in Athens, it is relatively easy to find students doing one of two things: dancing or raising money for charitable causes - or both.
Clubs and bars are full of students gyrating to loud music, and the Tate plaza is filled constantly with a plethora of student organizations.
Tonight, these two pastimes will combine in NOVO: A Benefit Dance Concert.
When: 8 tonight
Where: Morton Theatre
Price: $10
"I think combining dance with African fund-raising is a natural rhythm, and fund-raising is a natural export of this combination," said Pratt Cassity, lead instructor in Creswell's Global Engagement Learning Community.
Put on by the Global Engagement Learning Community, the NOVO concert raises money for the Benin Education Fund, a scholarship fund that provides educational support to 450 students in West Africa.
"We chose to fund education because it is the key to stopping the cycle of poverty. When people are educated, they are then equipped to make effective changes," said freshman Caitlin McKibben, the group's assistant coordinator.
"We decided on a dance benefit because many group members are passionate about dance, and we wanted to use what we love for a good cause."
During first semester, students in the learning community discuss and familiarize themselves with global issues.
Over the course of their second semester, the students plan a service project.
"The name NOVO comes from the Latin phrase 'de novo,' meaning to begin afresh, anew. We are hoping this event will raise money for students in Africa to begin again and have a new, fresh approach to education," said freshman Elizabeth Wilson, group coordinator.
Several performers and companies, including GDX, Pamoja, Dance FX and Contact Dance will collaborate to produce this concert.
"Each group is bringing their own music and choreography, so each company will be doing exactly what it does best," Wilson said.
