Students encouraged to apply to SGA

To the University Community:

Thank you for participating in this past Student Government Association election cycle, which yielded the highest voter turnout in a decade.

We are excited about accomplishing the goals we outlined during the campaign process, but now need your help to make them a reality.

We encourage all students to apply for positions within SGA. A list of those available with descriptions can be found on SGA's Web site at http://www.uga.edu/~sga/application/index.html. Applications are due Monday by 4 p.m. to the SGA office on the bottom floor of the Tate Student Center where students can then sign up for interviews, which will last from Tuesday to Friday.

Also, the deadline for commencement speaker applications has been extended to Monday at 4 p.m. These applications should be turned in at the SGA office and can be found online at the above link.

We look forward to serving you in the coming year.

Book about President Adams full of old news

(This letter is in response to Carolyn Crist's Tuesday's column, "Book questions President Adams' ethics."

I'm going to hit the treetops, but this is old news. A dead horse. An event that happened when we were in high school. A silly excuse to bash the administration.

I was offended by your comments about the public relations staff for President Adams. First, you're a Grady ambassador. Your comments refuted everything you stand for as an ambassador for the college. Instead of bashing others, try making recommendations or encouraging more open communication.

Despite what you think, I'm convinced my diploma has a heck of a lot more weight than my friends who are graduating from other universities. No college is perfect. Try not to believe everything you read. It seems like you can detect "spin" when you see it, so I don't know why your "spin-dar" wasn't going off on Saturday when you were reading the book.

Making fun of faiths offensive, 'narrow-minded'

(This letter is in response to Phillip Brettschneider's Wednesday letter, "Religious uncertainty better than comforting fantasy.")

I agree with Phillip Brettschneider that Christian assertions of changed living often ring false, and as a Christian, I strongly disagree with much of Tyrone Rivers' statements and manner. However, I find Brettschneider's remarks equally offensive.

Characterizing religious beliefs as "fantasy" seems disingenuous for someone who claims "honest uncertainty." An honest look at the world reveals that no unassailable verdict on the existence of God has ever been reached.

An honest believer and an honest skeptic must admit there are plausible arguments for either side.

I will not belittle the decision of anyone willing to go beyond this intellectual stalemate via a leap of faith even if I disagree with their conclusions. Conversely, I respect any honest and reasoned atheist or agnostic.

But caricaturing a Christian or any person of faith as a wild-eyed delusional who "needs" fantasy to get through life is narrow-minded at best and insulting at worst.

Ms. Strate:

I think Carolyn Crist's spin radar *was* going off, in response to the administration's lame attempt to cover up an embarrassing spectacle that it created for itself. (Continued…)

Also, I hear that Ms. Crist was "contacted" by a key member of the UGA administration after writing that piece. Sounds to me like her writing touched a nerve. (Continued…)
