Too little, too late.
After sleep waking through the first six innings, the No. 5 Georgia baseball team made a valiant comeback attempt, but still lost the first game of today's doubleheader 7-4 to Winthrop at Foley Field.
Silly errors continued to plague the Dogs (25-6) as they twice committed errors on sacrifice bunt attempts by Winthrop (20-10), one in a three-run third inning by starting pitcher Jason Leaver and another by catcher Bryce Massanari in the sixth.
Each of Georgia's second baseman made errors, starter David Thoms in the third and replacement Michael Demperio in the ninth. Winthrop took advantage of all of Georgia's errors, as five of its seven runs were unearned.
Leaver (3-1) allowed three runs, all unearned, in 2.2 innings of work.
The offense was equally inept, as it only managed one hit through the first six innings, an infield single by right fielder Peter Verdin.
Georgia loaded the bases in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but managed only four runs.
Colby May singled in Rich Poythress with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh and scored three in the ninth on a wild pitch that scored Joey Lewis and a two-run single by Matt Cerione.
The Eagles outhit the Dogs 13-6 and were never really threatened until the ninth inning. After taking advantage of Georgia's errors, they added a fourth run on a solo home run by nine-hole hitter Matt Thielepape and added single runs in both the sixth and eighth innings.
