Logan Gray, a redshirt sophomore from Missouri, has planted himself as Georgia's No. 2 quarterback this spring behind starter Joe Cox. The running threat with a strong arm has managed to stave off big-name freshmen QBs Zach Mettenberger and Aaron Murray, and he sat down with The Red & Black for an exclusive interview last week.


RB: So you're No. 2 on the depth chart right now. What does that mean to you?

LG: It really doesn't mean much right now. I've been getting a ton of reps this whole spring, and I'm just trying to utilize that and get better every day, because that's what I've really been trying to focus on this spring and I feel pretty confident so far.



RB: Joe obviously has a lot of experience in that No. 2 spot, has he given you any advice on how to handle it?

LG: He's seen it all, it seems like he's been around for a really long time. Even me, I guess this is my third season, it seems weird to say that. Just on certain plays and reading defenses and stuff, I think, is the biggest thing that Joe's been able to help me with. Because he just feels so comfortable reading blitzes and stuff like that.



RB: You had a run with special teams last year, but now you're focusing solely on quarterbacking. Has that helped?

LG: When you're just doing quarterback stuff the whole time, you just get so much more of a rhythm throughout practice ... I felt like sometimes I wasn't getting warm all the way, and just missing reps, I never got a rhythm going. I like it back how it is now. Even though I liked playing special teams, I feel a lot better doing this.



RB: Has it been kind of a tough learning process for Zach and Aaron this spring?

LG: I think it's definitely been a learning process, they've learned so much so fast. But I think they've handled it great. You're getting so many different things thrown at you at one time and you're trying to pick it up on the fly ... From day one until now, it's amazing how comfortable they look. You get out there the first day, I remember my first days at practice, you're like, man, is this football?



RB: Do you see them challenging you for the backup role as summer and fall camps progress?

LG: That's a hard question to answer. I think they'll definitely be competing for it. They've already been competing for it. But I'm trying to do everything I can to challenge Joe for the No. 1 spot. As much as things might be wrapped up or whatever as Joe's the starting quarterback, or me No. 2, they're competing for No. 2, and I think everybody's competing against each other every single day.
