Georgia was trailing Georgia Tech 9-5 when it got the bases loaded with nobody out in the home half of the inning, but proceeded not to score another run in the frame because of a pop-up to second base by junior Joey Lewis followed by two strikeouts to freshman Chase Davidson and Zach Cone.
"That was a huge situation … But we had freshmen coming [up to bat]," coach David Perno said. "Those freshmen haven't quite turned the corner, but they're going to get there."
May stays hot: Despite the Diamond Dogs' woes against Georgia Tech, freshman Colby May continued his outstanding hitting at the plate. May singled three times in four at-bats, to improve his average to .375, which leads all freshmen and ranks ninth overall.
"I'm seeing the baseball and hitting it, just working in practice, hitting off the tee and squaring the ball up, that's helped out a lot," May said.
The three hits mark the 15th time this season that May has multiple hits in a game, which ranks second on the team behind junior Rich Poythress, who has 18.
Demperio finds power: Having not hit a home run since May 7 against Quinnipiac, junior Michael Demperio connected for his third long-ball of the season in the second inning for a two-run shot. Demperio had been struggling at the plate for a couple weeks and was benched for the first time against Kentucky over the weekend.
"I was sitting on a fastball and I got it," he said. "I was looking to drive something, and I was hoping that this would boost me. I was seeing the ball well tonight."
