The Board of Regents will no longer require 75 minimum days of instruction per semester at state institutions.
The semester system revision, approved Wednesday, states the academic year will consist of two regular semesters, each no less than 15 instructional weeks in length. The old policy mandated a 75-day minimum of instructional class days within those 15 weeks - a clause that was removed from the new policy.
The policy no longer specifies how many class days must make up a semester. Fifteen five-day weeks would equal 75 days for a semester - but the new policy does not require each of those to be instructional class days.
When asked if this change was made to allow for faculty furloughs in the fall, Regents spokesman John Millsaps said the decision was unrelated to furloughs. He told the Red & Black he was not sure why the change was made.
The Regents also approved three real estate-related requests from the University, Millsaps said.
Ground lease and rental agreements were approved for the new dorm on East Campus that will house 550 students. Construction is set to begin May 2009 and is expected to be complete by July 2010.
The board also approved a non-exclusive easement - or right to use land owned by another - of 1.35 acres between the University and Athens-Clarke County that will allow a bridge to be built across the North Oconee River.
And the Board accepted a "gift of approximately 109.108 acres of improved real property at 1171 Astondale Road, Bishop, Ga., from the University of Georgia Athletic Association, Inc. for the use and benefit of UGA," according to the proposal.
The property was formerly used as a horse farm and includes a 17,000-square-foot covered arena and a 9,325-square-foot 24-stall horse barn.
The Regents also voted to establish a major in fisheries and wildlife in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, and to terminate the Associate of Applied Science cooperative degree between the University and Athens Technical College.
