- 15th Annual James C. Cantrell Lecture: The Mathematical Theory of Shape and its Applications to Computer Vision and Medical Imaging (Part 1 of 2). Fields Medalist David Mumford, professor of Applied Mathematics at Brown University, gives the first of two talks, in which Mumford gives a less technical introduction to the range of mathematical problems concerning "shape" which arise from object recognition and medical diagnosis. In particular, he will explain in simple terms why it may be useful for a physician to be aware that shapes form an infinite-dimensional non-linear manifold. 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. 328 Boyd Graduate Studies Building. Franklin Visiting Scholar Tayari Jones, author of "Leaving Atlanta and the Untelling," discusses the role of fiction and its relationship to the popular narratives of our communities. 4 p.m. 148 Miller Student Learning Center.
