A female student in her early 20s reported sexual battery by an unknown suspect on Thomas Street Wednesday between 10:30 and 11 p.m.

According to the police report:

The victim was walking home on Thomas Street from downtown toward North Avenue. She was somewhere between Hancock and Dougherty Streets.

She heard a man in a low voice ask her for a cigarette. When she turned to say she did not have one, he pushed her to the ground.

The man ripped her clothes and tried to unbutton her pants.

A car pulled up, which triggered the suspect to flee. The victim immediately ran toward North Avenue.

Though no signs of struggle were found in the area, the reporting officer noted the victim had ripped clothing, bruising and cuts. Due to the nature of the incident, the victim was unable to identify anything about the suspect except that he is a large, strong male with a deep voice.

The woman refused EMS treatment.

Police are still investigating the incident and have requested any video surveillance from the area.
