Magwitz was a doctoral candidate in Child and Family Development specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy.
Magwitz's body was found face-down by doctoral candidate Lisa Zak-Hunter. She checked on Magwitz after he didn't reschedule an appointment.
Zak-Hunter declined comment but, according to the police report, she said:
Magwitz had re-injured his back while on a 10-day trip to England and was on a medication for treatment. Zak-Hunter last saw Magwitz at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at which time he appeared drunk.
She said Magwitz had a pregnant ex-fiancee and had "been down" lately, but she saw no signs of suicide.
ACC Coroner Sonny Wilson said Magwitz died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The cause is being investigated at the crime lab in Atlanta.
"Dirk, you will be greatly missed," professor Carla Nancoo wrote on The Red & Black's Web site Thursday. "Our program, department and lives have been changed since knowing you."
No funeral arrangements have been made.
