Race relations

A racial divide exists here, but it's not because of Univ. groups and programs.

Chris Chiego's Monday column argues the University's campaign to promote diversity has led to a racial divide on campus. Chiego insists he intends to open a debate on campus race relations. The numerous comments on our Web site show he's succeeded.

We do think a racial divide exists on campus. But we don't quite agree that the University and the diversity campaign is to blame.

Our school is in the South, and while we don't buy the age-old stereotype that the South is full of ignorant rednecks, we can't deny that racial division is still an institutionalized product of our geography and its history.

Attempts to promote diversity is a reaction to the fact that minorities have been excluded from many of the activities white students have enjoyed for years. Sure, minority students are represented, often disproportionately, in ambassadorial groups and promotional brochures. But how many black students feel comfortable knowing that they represent just 7 percent of the student body at a public university in a state that is approximately 30 percent black?

Given this environment, we don't fault the University in its attempts to empower minorities. An education is not gained solely in a classroom. Your experience at the University will be enriched through contact with people from different cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds.

Maybe someday our campus won't need to emphasize the racial diversity, minorities will be accepted into every facet of campus life and students will be recognized for their character instead of their culture or skin color. But that day seems a long way off.

"Our school is in the South" ......

Try living in Detroit, Chicago or in particular Boston and then come back and tell us where the worst institutional racism is. (Continued…)

Well, since you choose instead of reasoned debate to say my post is "short-sighted and pointless", you appear to not be very "diverse" in allowing other opinions. (Continued…)

P.S. to Ella:

It's time to "get over it". For all you know, I have been discriminated against more than any "ethnic" person at UGA because of my socio-economic status, weight, height, religion, dress or any number of factors. (Continued…)

I have no idea what your ethnic or cultural background is and I don't think it matters. If you did face discrimination at UGA, wouldn't you want to have the opportunity to be a part of a group that can relate to your situation and give you an outlet to express yourself? If you don't face discrimination, why does it matter? If there are groups who want to get together and celebrate their culture, they should not face any resistance. (Continued…)

Kyle:

Thank you so much for reminding me of the military application. You made my day!

Ella:

Do you know why the American military has been the best (not perfect) but the best social vehicle in history for bringing all races and nationalities together as one well working unit - where all are respected and rank is the only discriminatory agent? And it even works great for "draftees" who don't even want to be there. (Continued…)

That was not a very intelligent or grateful statement but if you know anything about the military you would know that only about 10% every have anything to do with physically defending your right to say what you just did. (Continued…)

I didn't read all of the comments here, but the part in the "Our Take" about how the South is such a racist region is bull.

Anyone who has lived in certain areas in the north, midwest, or west knows that racism exists everywhere, and the south (especially anywhere in metro Atlanta or nearby) isn't that bad in comparison. (Continued…)
