Univ. should take precautions

As a parent of a [Virginia] Tech student, I am dismayed that UGA officials failed to lock down the University given the murders [Saturday] in Athens and those of April 16, 2007 in Blacksburg, Va.

In my opinion, Virginia Tech officials failed their students, faculty and families miserably by not immediately locking down the university after two students were shot and killed on the morning of April 16, 2007.

Virginia Tech officials made a terrible decision to not lock down the campus.

They made this decision knowing an armed gunman was running loose.

The only thing they actually knew was that two students had been shot and killed and the killer and his weapons were nowhere to be found.

The killer went on to gun down an additional 30 innocent students and teachers just several hours after his first two murders.

My point is this: UGA officials appear to not have learned anything from the massacre at Virginia Tech.

It's simple really; if there is an armed gunman on the loose, he could be anywhere and strike again at any time. Any and every precaution should be taken to protect the students, faculty and staff at the University.
